  1. 1894-1964. US abstract painter. He used 
  2. hard-edged geometric shapes in primary 
  3. colours and experimented with collage. Much 
  4. of his work shows the influence of jazz
  5. tempos. In the 1920s he produced paintings of 
  6. commercial packaging, such as Lucky Strike 
  7. 1921 (Museum of Modern Art, New York), that 
  8. foreshadow Pop art. His early abstracts 
  9. reflect the impact of Cubism, and he was 
  10. deeply influenced by the Armory Show in New 
  11. York 1913. He often used numbers or letters 
  12. as the focus for his compositions.
